Context

A major Canadian financial institution was building a new exchange-traded fund (ETF) team in Toronto, complementing an established team already operating in Montreal. The client initially had several job descriptions and different profiles in mind to support this growth. Our team worked with the client from the outset to better define the hiring needs and focus the search on a specific profile for which multiple hires could be made.

Rather than focusing on a high volume of outreach, the sourcing strategy was built around a precise mapping of Toronto’s ETF talent market. In-depth research was conducted to identify financial institutions and specialized funds operating in the market, as well as the different names used for teams responsible for ETF activities. During the first two weeks, the search focused closely on professionals matching the initial criteria. Starting in the third week, the talent pool was expanded to include professionals with a relevant combination of portfolio analysis experience and ETF exposure, even when their backgrounds did not perfectly match the original job description.
